How does wart removal work?
How does wart removal work?
Doctor-led removal options

Warts are caused by HPV and can persist or spread, particularly when irritated or treated inconsistently. Professional wart removal starts with an in-clinic assessment to confirm the lesion is suitable for treatment and to select the safest method based on location, size, and skin type.

Depending on the clinical plan, removal may involve controlled freezing (cryotherapy), electrosurgery, curettage/excision, or other appropriate approaches. Local anaesthetic may be used where needed. Healing commonly involves a scab or temporary redness, and outcomes vary by wart type and location.

Aftercare is important: keeping the area clean, avoiding picking, and following guidance reduces infection risk and helps minimise spread. Some warts can recur and may require more than one session. We explain expected timelines and when to return for review.

wart removal FAQs
Do warts always need removing?

Not always. Many warts are harmless and can resolve without treatment, but removal can be appropriate if a wart is painful, spreading, persistent, bleeding, cosmetically distressing, or not responding to home measures.

How do you decide the best removal method?

We assess the lesion’s location, size, wart type, skin type, symptoms, and medical history. The goal is to choose the safest and most effective option while keeping healing and scar risk proportionate.

Is wart removal painful?

Discomfort varies by method and location. Local anaesthetic may be used where appropriate. Some tenderness, redness, blistering (with freezing), or scabbing can be normal during healing.

How long does healing take?

Many patients heal over 1–2 weeks, but this can vary by wart size, treatment method, and location. Your clinician will give personalised wound care advice and what to expect.

Can warts come back?

Yes. Warts can recur and sometimes need repeat treatment. Aftercare and spread-prevention advice can reduce reinfection risk, but recurrence can still happen.

When should I seek review after treatment?

If you develop increasing pain, spreading redness, discharge, fever, or concerns about healing, you should contact the clinic. We also advise review for persistent or recurrent lesions.
