A vasectomy works by safely interrupting the pathway that sperm travel through, preventing them from mixing with semen during ejaculation. Normally, sperm are produced in the testicles and move through two tubes called the vas deferens before being released as part of the ejaculate. During a vasectomy, these tubes are accessed and sealed, meaning sperm can no longer enter the semen. The rest of the reproductive system continues to function exactly as before.
