How does liposuction work?

Targeted fat removal and contour refinement

Liposuction is a surgical body contouring procedure designed to remove localised fat deposits and improve shape. It is not a weight-loss treatment, but a method to refine contour where fat has been resistant to diet and exercise.

During treatment, small access points are used to introduce instruments beneath the skin to remove fat in a controlled way. Your doctor plans the treated areas carefully to support a natural, proportionate result. Swelling and bruising are expected initially, and compression garments are commonly recommended to support healing and help the tissues settle.

Results develop over weeks to months as swelling resolves and the body adapts. Outcomes vary depending on anatomy, skin quality, treatment extent, and adherence to aftercare. As with any surgery, liposuction carries risks including bruising, swelling, discomfort, contour irregularity, numbness, infection, bleeding/seroma, scarring, and, rarely, more significant complications. These are discussed as part of informed consent.

How long is recovery?

Recovery varies by area and treatment extent. Many patients need 1–2 weeks off work depending on role, with exercise typically resumed after around 2–4 weeks as advised.

Will I need compression garments?

Often, yes. Compression is commonly recommended to support swelling reduction and tissue settling. Your clinician will advise the appropriate garment and wear schedule.

When will I see results?

Some change may be visible once early swelling settles, but results typically improve over weeks to months as swelling resolves.

Are results permanent?

Fat cells removed do not return, but remaining fat cells can enlarge with weight gain. Results are best maintained with stable weight and a healthy lifestyle.
